About Us
The Team!
Hybrid Models was launched in 2026 by Nigel and Jana Paine.
You may know Nigel from his appearances demonstrating at Gauge ‘O’ Guild exhibitions and virtual shows. Jana, his wife, is the administrative queen.
Their aim is to offer a selection of ‘O’ Gauge kits and components based on prototypes from the North East of England. This mostly draws from the Stockton and Darlington Railway and North Eastern Railway.
Whilst Nigel’s modelling is almost exclusive to this area, some would also say he is known to have a fetish for Deltics and Slovakian Railways. Jana reckons that if we produce our own kits then Nigel can concentrate on building them rather than being distracted!
Oh, and there is one other thing you should know about us; alongside the railways, cats are a major feature of our life.
Our Experience
Nigel has been involved with model railways all his life (which some say is a very long time!). He was heavily involved with ‘Ravensbeck’ and ‘Runswick Bay’ exhibition layouts built by the Keighley 7mm Group in the last century. Even today he remains the junior member of the Group.
At 14 Nigel was assembling Slaters Plastikard hopper wagon kits and scratch building NER Snowploughs for pocket money. Since then he has assembled around 100 loco kits but has little to show for this, having sold the vast majority to happy customers.
Retirement approaches and Hybrid Models seems like a good idea for keeping an idle mind and hands busy.
A Proper E-shop
The Hybrid Models’ operational capability draws directly from Jana and Nigel’s day job. They run their own business and have a lot of experience managing the entire production and sales process. This goes from creating a bill of materials for the kits, laying out a structured production schedule, right the way through to keeping you, the customer, fully informed about the status of their order. Small enough to care, big enough to cope!
Our E-shop is designed to be easy to navigate, informative and hopefully interesting as well. The intention is that every kit will come with an on-line assembly video as well as paper instructions . . . let’s see!
Son Patrick is a plastic modeller but, who knows, maybe he will get involved; like his father he loved trains when he was young!
